Jacob Riis’ ability to allow his images to tell their own story has inspired my future photographic work. In ethically evaluative photography, the subjects are almost always extremely sensitive. Understanding how to highlight an untold story with specific composition, lighting, and color choices is vital to successfully convey an ethical issue through photography. Riis’ work has provided me with great examples of my combined interest in black and white and ethically evaluative photography.

My comment on Amber’s blog:

Hi Amber, you did a great job of both describing the images and interpreting their composition, lighting, and color. Your clear assessments provide a richer understanding of Galen Rowell’s work through effectively addressing information from Chapter 4 of Criticizing Photographs. You also provided a good range of composition examples to give the viewer a greater grasp of Rowell’s skill. This photographer makes me feel closer to nature and inspired to experiment in various types of landscape photography, as you similarly discussed at the end of your video. Great job! - Keely McKenna
